Getting to know you
Dapper Grove, while a partnership is really driven by the craftsmanship of Joe. A Master Carpenter with over 35 years of experience Joe has worked tirelessly to perfect and create unique items. I tore Joe away from his tools to sit down with me over a tea and a Mars bar (this may have been a bribe) to chat about himself and his work a bit more.
Joe what inspired you to become a woodworker?
My dad inspired me, he was always inventing things and it really did make me want to create things as well.
How did you get started?
I started young and began an apprenticeship in England that lasted for 5 years.
What types of wood do you prefer to work with and why?
I love hardwoods like Oak and Walnut. I really enjoy the tones and grains in those kinds of woods.
What has been your favourite project that you have done?
I’ve gotten to make some really interesting things, but I think my favourite was a secret bookcase I made complete with the book hook. I love making things with secret compartments, it really brings out the kid in me.
What do you find are some of the most challenging aspects of woodworking and how do you overcome them?
Coming up with new ideas. Sometimes it feels like you just hit a wall and then all of a sudden a light will come on and it is clear sailing after that. When I get stuck I take a break and go for a walk to clear my head.
How do you ensure quality in your work?
I pay attention to the small things. It is the small things that really set you apart.
What advice would you give someone just starting out?
A couple things, one make sure you enjoy the work. Secondly listen to advice from others, there are so many talented crafts people out there and you can learn so much from them if you just listen and watch.
